Blog #3. Embracing Refreshment
In the palm of your hand rests a small, metallic, and rectangular object; within it contains numerous refreshments. The exterior is smooth and cool to the touch; as you grasp it, the interior rattles with its contents. Your fingertips explore its shape, feeling the edges that promise an experience that is both stimulating and invigorating. With a quick flip of your thumb, the lid pops open, immediately tainting the air with a crisp zing that tickles the nose, reminiscent of a cool breeze on a spring morning.

Once open, you move the thin paper that covers what is inside, revealing plenty of small, white cylindrical objects. You pick one up with your finger and thumb, and as your fingers cradle it, you’re met with a sensation of coolness that seeps through the skin as if it carries the essence of a brisk winter morning. A small amount of white powdery residue is left behind as you place it on your tongue. As it lingers within your mouth, a rush of coolness envelops you, removing any remnants of normality with its icy embrace.

Each breath carries with it a cool menthol sensation. A reminder of the power that is carried by such a small object. A wave of freshness is released throughout your senses as you take an anticipated bite, crunching it between your teeth. Time seems to stand still in this moment of sensory immersion as if the world around you has paused while you embrace the feeling of rejuvenation. As the remaining flavor fades into memory, you are left with a lingering sense of satisfaction.

I could literally taste Altoids while reading this. This is a perfect example of "show don't tell." If I had my eyes closed and you were reading this out loud, I would have felt every moment of this, from opening the metal container, to the lingering sense of satisfaction in the end.
ReplyDeleteI smiled while reading this, and although I still didn't know what mint you were describing, this descriptive writing made me want to up my writing after reading some of the other blogs. I struggled with this blog. Although I enjoyed my item and the taste, it doesn't spark my creative interest to describe how you and another individual blog have done it so professionally.
ReplyDeleteNice article, short and sweet. Are you talking about Altoids? That's what your entry reminded me of. The metallic, rectangular container and thin paper makes me think of a tin of Altoids. Your choice of images is interesting. They don't look related to what you're describing, but they make sense when thinking about the taste of Altoids. Nice writing.
ReplyDeleteGreat job at using "curiously strong" sensory details to illustrate the experience of eating this mint.
